Julia Sneden was a writer, friend, wife, mother, Grandmother, care-giver and Senior Women Web's Resident Observer. Her career included editorial work for Sunset Magazine, 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios as well as teaching. Julia was a passionate opponent of this country’s educational system, which she felt was floundering. She will be greatly missed as the heart of this website and this editor's friend of fifty years.

Heart Song; Thoughts on loss
She was an in-law, a chum of 45 years, someone I loved. It is going to be very hard to forego the bi-monthly phone conversations in which we shared family news. We used to talk about our splendid children. These days, we talked mostly about our splendid grandchildren. more »
Downsized by Corporate America; Frustrations of a Recipe Cook
It’s not that I use a recipe for every meal these days, nor do I shop all at once on a Saturday: I’m no longer that hidebound. But when I do cook from a recipe, I expect it to work, and when corporate America downsizes a standard canned or bottled or boxed product without calling attention to the change, it really throws me. Digging for Roots
It didn’t take my husband long to discover that our fathers were 5th cousins, via an eighteenth century common ancestor. That meant we are sixth cousins, and our three sons are their own 7th cousins (for a while thereafter they took delight in greeting each other with cries of "Cuz!"). more »
Utterly Unsuitable: Choosing a Swimsuit for an Older Woman
With older women and men doing water aerobics and swimming laps, wouldn’t you think the bathing suit manufacturers would twig to there’s a huge market out here? We buy suits more often than teenagers because we’re harder on them. No lying still on a beach blanket for hours, or languidly standing around the lifeguard’s chair. more »
