Tam Gray writes: I first became truly aware of Richard Feynman when he testified in front of the Rogers Commission as to the possible cause of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. I had witnessed the explosion on television while a News Desk Editor at Time magazine; no other televised incident had to that point, and now after it, affected me with that level of sadness.
Jill Norgren Reviews: Why do mystery writers create a series? Obviously, the pleasure of developing characters over time has appeal as well as the opportunity to explore varying issues within an established framework. Doting fans and good money also speak to the attractiveness of the genre. On the other side of the table sit the readers. What is the pull of a series for them, and does a series ever lose its allure?

When Sandi Smith asked what she hopes to accomplish next, Earle said "I think the most important thing I can do in my lifetime with whatever time that I have is to protect the wild system — the natural systems that remain on the land and in the sea. I want to encourage an ethic in people — an attitude of respect for nature. I can only encourage them to understand that we are inextricably tied to the natural systems that support us and it's in our best interests to do everything we can to take of them. It's not us versus nature."
Set in London in 1961, "Breathless" follows the exploits of doctors, nurses, and spouses connected with a busy obstetrics ward at a National Health Service hospital. It's a time when gynecologists are all men and nurses aspire to a trip down the aisle with a good-looking doctor. Abortion is illegal, the Beatles are still nobodies, and society is on the cusp of profound change.
Hongjie Dai and colleagues have developed a cheap, emissions-free device that uses a 1.5-volt battery to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen gas could be used to power fuel cells in zero-emissions vehicles."Using nickel and iron, which are cheap materials, we were able to make the electrocatalysts active enough to split water at room temperature with a single 1.5-volt battery," says Dai.

"In late August 2001, Air Transat flight 236 departed Toronto for Lisbon, Portugal with 306 passengers and crew on board. Midway over the Atlantic Ocean, the plane suddenly ran out of fuel. Everyone on board was instructed to prepare for an ocean ditching, which included a countdown to impact, loss of on-board lighting, and cabin de-pressurization."
Joan L. Cannon writes: I’ll always be grateful that I married a man whose leaning towards the critters was as pronounced as mine. We had space in the country for the eleven cats, ten dogs, and three horses along with guinea pigs, canaries, and other livestock. Our oversized Manx cat always tried to fit into the oval opening of a new box of Kleenex. Of course, his name was Cassius (Clay), Mohammed Ali Cat.
Articles: "About 1 in 5 Medicare patients is discharged from hospice care alive, whether due to patients' informed choice, a change in their condition, or inappropriate actions by the hospice to save on hospitalization costs related to terminal illness"; "End-of-life measures are limited in capturing caregiver assessment of the quality of EOL care"; "To provide a more thorough assessment of end-of-life care, we analyzed Medicare claims data ... to document places of care and health care transitions ... in the last months of life."
Editor's Note: I have been married to men who were US military service members. First as wife of an Army Security Agency member in Germany while I worked for Army Special Services in Frankfurt and, later (and still today), as the wife of a former Air Force Public Affairs Agency member who served in Viet Nam. During those years, the military draft was still in effect, and while our husbands were in Viet Nam, I was one of three wives who met each week in Sarasota, FL as our husbands served. Unlike today, we had little chance to communicate with our husbands except through letters and once to meet in Hawaii on R&R after the Tet offensive.
The first woman to ever win the Fields Medal – known as the 'Nobel Prize of mathematics' – in recognition of Mirzakhani's contributions to the understanding of the symmetry of curved surfaces. It has implications for the study of prime numbers and cryptography. Despite the breadth of applications of her work, she had said that she enjoys pure mathematics because of the elegance and longevity of the questions she studies.
Lautrec's work allows entry into many facets of Parisian life, from politics to the rise of popular entertainment in the form of cabarets and café-concerts. Lautrec made the venues and performers of late-19th-century Paris famous through his posters and prints, and in turn, it was his work for them that brought him the greatest acclaim.
As a first demonstration of its potential, researchers used the brain-like tissue to study chemical and electrical changes that occur immediately following traumatic brain injury and, in a separate experiment, changes that occur in response to a drug. The tissue could provide a superior model for studying normal brain function as well as injury and disease, and could assist in the development of new treatments for brain dysfunction.
Bioengineers have created three-dimensional brain-like tissue that…
Dr. Jacquelyn Campbell: "In leaving out abusive dating partners, current federal firearm prohibitions ignore the perpetrators of a large and growing share of intimate partner homicides …S. 1290, the Protecting Domestic Violence and Stalking Victims Act, would expand our national domestic violence laws to include both former and current dating partners."
"This study explores the relationship between using social networks sites (SNS), marriage satisfaction and divorce rates using survey data of married individuals and state-level data from the United States. Results show that using SNS is negatively correlated with marriage quality and happiness, and positively correlated with experiencing a troubled relationship and thinking about divorce. These correlations hold after a variety of economic, demographic, and psychological variables related to marriage well-being are taken into account."
Sterling and Francine Clark began what is now a world-renowned collection of American and European art, including prints and drawings, sculpture, decorative arts, and paintings — most notably French Impressionist masterworks by artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, and Camille Pissarro. They also committed to the pivotal concept of serving as not only an art museum, but also a research and academic center.
National nutrition guidelines emphasize consumption of powerhouse fruits and vegetables (PFV), foods most strongly associated with reduced chronic disease risk; yet efforts to define PFV are lacking. This study developed and validated a classification scheme defining PFV as foods providing, on average, 10% or more daily value per 100 kcal of 17 qualifying nutrients.
In mid-2014, Project Gutenberg volunteers undertook a significant revitalization of their bookshelves. These are groupings of eBooks on particular topics, or in particular genres, or otherwise having something in common. This can be a great way to discover books you were unaware of, and it is also an efficient way of finding some of the collection of particular interest. And, we recommend a book on bookshelves themselves .. "they now growing numerous, and lying one upon another on my chairs ... Samuel Pepys, 1666"
I know a time will come when lack of responsibility moves from respite to emptiness, when I will long for a beating heart nearby. Until then, I will talk to myself and my departed husband. For a smidgen of care taking, I’ll tend to the mixed bouquet on my kitchen table. Trim stems, change water, add crystal. I think I can handle that.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released a report that raises concerns about the impact of opting in to overdraft services for debit card and ATM transactions. The study found that the majority of debit card overdraft fees are incurred on transactions of $24 or less and that the majority of overdrafts are repaid within three days. If a consumer borrowed $24 for three days and paid the median overdraft fee of $34, such a loan would carry a 17,000 annual percentage rate.
If you put a cat inside an opaque box and make his life dependent on a random event, when does the cat die? When the random event occurs, or when you open the box? Though common sense suggests the former, quantum mechanics — or at least the most common "Copenhagen" interpretation enunciated by Danish physicist Neils Bohr in the 1920s – says it’s the latter. Someone has to observe the result before it becomes final. Until then, paradoxically, the cat is both dead and alive at the same time.
Rose Madeline Mula writes: I have a serious disconnect between mind and body — thank goodness. No way do I want to face reality! Instead, I'm going shopping. I want to buy a couple of sleeveless mini dresses, some skinny jeans with frayed knees, a pair of stilettos, and a new bikini, which I'm going to need when I start my surfing lessons next week.
"The lost decade, between Congress approving the [Women-Owned Small Business Procurement] program in 2000 and the Small Business Administration (SBA) rulemaking in 2011, translated to $94 billion in missed contracting opportunities for WOSBs [women-owned small businesses]. And while the percentage of prime contracts awarded to WOSBs increased following the program’s final implementation in 2011, the federal government has still yet to meet its five percent goal."
An event data recorder (EDR) is an electronic sensor installed in a motor vehicle that records certain technical information about a vehicle’s operational performance for a few seconds immediately prior to and during a crash. Although over 90% of all new cars and light trucks sold in the United States are equipped with them, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is proposing that all new light vehicles have EDRs installed in the future.
