Why do some people fret over the most trivial matters while others remain calm in the face of calamity? Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have identified two different chinks in our brain circuitry that explain why some of us are more prone to anxiety.
Perhaps the greatest disparity between the religious makeup of Congress and the people it represents, however, is in the percentage of the unaffiliated — those who describe their religion as atheist, agnostic or "nothing in particular."
The agency examines the use of public funds; evaluates federal programs and policies; and provides analyses, recommendations, and other assistance to help Congress make informed oversight, policy, and funding decisions. I tossed into a Target shopping basket a glittery card, "To My Wonderful Husband, Happy Valentine's Day." Who says romance is dead? That's us, maybe not you. So, as a favor to those who mush about the upcoming holiday, I've gathered some apps to help make hearts flutter
I became curious about the difference in the dreams of those who recovered from depression on their own and those who did not. This started me on a series of studies of people going through a particular emotional problem — divorce. After studying 150 people over a period of years, I discovered that dreams have a specific function: In the healthy person, dreams regulate mood. In some depressed people, the dreams are self-correcting over time, but other people need additional help.

The Historical Society of Princeton presents Einstein At Home, featuring family photographs, artwork, special memorabilia, and seventeen select pieces. Einstein is quoted saying: "But I also found Princeton fine. A pipe as yet unsmoked. Young and fresh. Much is to be expected from America's youth"
Baggalini Urban Backpack: Developed by two retired Delta Airlines flight attendants, this versatile bag converts from a shoulder bag to backpack by unzipping and rehooking the shoulder strap. Interior has numerous compartments for items you normally carry in your wallet plus slots for your cell phone and pen and zippered spaces for coins and cosmetics. Two exterior pockets zip shut. Magnetic catch at top of bag conceals the zipper ends of main compartment. And there's still room for a small book and a bottle of water.
A vivid portrait of the near future when great numbers of people, mainly women, will not only live longer, but alone. In the US, many of these seniors expect to continue working and playing, sometimes battling chronic illness, but above all, maintaining independence and freedom
Until we learn to respect each other and each other’s points of view on everything from religion and politics to butter versus margarine, we will neither grow nor grow up. It is not necessary that we agree, nor that we all like each other, though I admit it’s easier when we do.
"A long time collector of ‘things' Peter trawls the markets with his wife textile designer Karen Nicol and collects old stamps, faded maps, love letters, labels, buttons, dress making patterns, playing cards, textiles cotton webbing that binds books and paper boxes for the basis of his work"
It’s always easier to write about the causes of fear than every-day drudgery, and the author’s descriptions of these scares and others make her summer sound exciting – in both senses of the word. She does this as though she’s writing a novel; her account of these events is gripping.
When the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust unveiled a portrait with strong claims to be the only surviving contemporary likeness of Shakespeare, it created an international stir. But wait, there's another claim about a 1603 portrait created by an ancestor who was a bit actor in Shakespeare’s troupe
Their gilded surfaces and brilliant colors put them at odds with the austere criteria of the scholars' aesthetic from the Song dynasty. In 1368 Cao Zhao wrote that cloisonné enamels were not suitable for study by members of the scholar class and were really appropriate only for the apartments of women
Dr. Thomas Gill's ability to resurrect his career time and again reflects a profound weakness at the center of the US system of death investigation. A chronic shortage of qualified forensic pathologists allows even questionably competent practitioners to remain employable
Taking inspiration from the rich depictions in early European paintings, iconic costumes in museum collections, photographs, sketches and even literary descriptions, de Borchgrave skillfully works paper to achieve the effect of textiles: crumpling, pleating, braiding, feathering and painting the surface.
As a lifelong addict of puzzle-solving, or at least of taking a whack at it, I’ve been delighted to note that nowadays neurologists and gerontologists recommend that we seniors keep our minds sharp by doing crossword puzzles. To me, that’s a bit like giving a chocolate lover the key to the Godiva factory
"Not even the senior managers could explain the behavior of these employees," says Deshpandé. "In the interview, the vice chairman of the company says that they knew all the back exits — the natural human instinct would be to flee. These are people who instinctively did the right thing. And in the process, some of them, unfortunately, gave their lives to save guests." A dozen employees died
Room light before bedtime may impact sleep quality, blood pressure and diabetes risk; new study shows indoor lighting has profound suppressive effect on the hormone melatonin.

Half a century later, my husband and I decided to visit the country we had so long ago feared. When I told our friends that we were going to Vietnam I could see the question in their eyes. Why, of all places, did we want to go there? They had painful memories, too. And to be honest, I was concerned about how Americans would be viewed all these years later.

The Republican Party’s capture of the House of Representatives has feminists worried. As the 112th Congress convened, feminists held meetings and rallies all over the nation’s capitol where they spoke about Republican plans to reduce or dismantle programs that protect women.
Cleopatra: A Life — In the end, we must ask ourselves if Stacy Schiff, one of the most gifted American biographers currently writing, has successfully peeled away two millennia of myth and propaganda or, rather, given us a new myth, a Cleopatra who fits modern, Western feminist thinking. In the Pursuit of Happiness — To call Maria Kalman's work idiosyncratic isn’t nearly powerful enough to describe what she has produced. It is an explosion of such brilliance that one scarcely knows where to start
